Someday Mondays
We used to go to Someday Bar every Monday evening when Steve and I were taking WSET 2 together. Our class ended at 8:30 p.m., and we always wanted some wine and food afterward. Most restaurants in Portland are closed on Mondays, and restaurants close pretty early here in Portland anyway, usually 9 p.m. Most bars are open every evening, but they don’t have a good selection of wines. We found Someday Bar, a wonderful little wine bar, tucked away in an alley off Division Street, between SE 36th and 37th. They have a small food menu that changes frequently, and they have a great rotating menu of wines by the glass, and even by the half-glass.
Steve is usually in Battle Ground on Mondays these days, and I’m usually back at work, but we extended the weekend this week. Since he was here Monday evening, we decided to go to Someday Bar, which we hadn’t been to in ages. It was perfect. It’s nice to be able to try so many different wines, since you can order by the half glass. Their wines tend to be unique, interesting, high-quality wines from lesser-known, lesser-hyped regions, and thus lower price points. They’re a really good value. The food ranges from a slab of bread with butter, to ruffles with french onion dip, to steak tartare. It’s a mix of fancy food and trashy pleasures that pair well with wine without being pretentious. You can satiate your hunger for under $15, or you can spend slightly more on some fancier choices.
As usual, we had a great time and will go back again and again.
This was an endive salad with a tarragon dressing and labneh. Delectable.
Steak tartare, Delightful. Perfect.
